Collection: Japan - Shin Bijutsukai Block Print Patterns

These beautiful woodblock prints were first published in Shin-Bijutsukai (新美術海), a monthly magazine published in the late 1800s and early 1900s that featured designs from several artists of the day. The magazine itself was edited by designer Koran Fukuyama (1875-1910) for most of its run. A variety of colourful patterns with Japanese motifs from day-to-day life and nature are woven with abstract shapes representing a touch of European modernism. We have restored these to be as vibrant as when they were first printed.
